Her success story is hinged on failures, hard work, perseverance, never ending learning, constant engagements, feedback, partnerships and most importantly passion worth a million.
Mabel Simpson was born in Accra, Ghana. She attended Ridge Church School and moved on to Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast where she studied Visual Arts. She had her university education at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi where she studied Communication Design and majored in Graphic Design graduating in BA Communication Design. For her National Service, Mabel served as Teaching Assistant in her department at the College of Art and Social Sciences.
Mabel at the age of 26 willingly resigned from her corporate job to start a creative enterprise, mSimps, with a meagre seed capital of $100 (Ghs 200), a 53 year old sewing machine gifted her by her grandmother and a passion worth a million.
In 2015, Mabel was privileged to participate in AWEP (Africa Women Entrepreneurship Programme, an IVLP (International Visitor Leadership Programme) program facilitated by the U.S Department of State. After the initiative, she developed a return-to-work plan with the primary focus of nurturing upcoming talents in the creative industry. She signed up to workshops and conferences as a resource person to share her experiences gained through the program. One of which include partnering with the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education Training (CTVET) under their Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme as a ‘Role Model’ to speak to over 2,000 students across the nation to educate and inspire them on the exciting career opportunities available under TVET.
In May 2021, Mabel was inducted as a member of the Textiles, Apparel & Garment Sector Skills Body. The SSB’s are established under the Ministry of Education through the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training as part of government’s TVET transformation strategy to drive growth, explore business opportunities, innovation and capacity needs within the sector.
Eight (8) years after graduating from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mabel was invited by the University to deliver a motivational message to the graduating class of the College of Art and Built Environment.
As a member of SheTrades Commonwealth, an ITC (International Trade Center) and UKaid initiative, Mabel was selected as one of the 2 Ghanaian women to participate in a sponsored study tour to New York, USA to increase her knowledge in the Textiles and Apparel world market, market strategies, how to reach international buyers, trade shows and market trends.
In 2022, she led mSimps to be selected as one of the 20 fashion and textile brands for an SME training programme in Ghana and Germany being put together by GIZ and COGNOS International.
In her free time, Mabel likes to go on adventure trips, read and watch movies
